 Road tunnels and technology in an operational perspective

Tecdron wins the largest tender ever published in Europe for technical assistance and fire-fighting robots. A new more powerful and more reliable robot will be used by the Parisian Fire Brigade to secure the underground works of the “Grand Paris”.

The Intersec is the World’s leading trade fair for Safety, Security and Fire Protection and the Fire and Rescue section appears to be growing steadily, and remains the fastest growing section at the Intersec 2018. With more than 1300 exhibitors and over 30 000 visitors coming from 129 countries, Intersec is the largest exhibition and the most international trade platform in its industry worldwide.

In desember 2017, I visited the International Fire Academy in Balsthal, Switzerland. A special designed tunnel fire training facility, where fire fighters from all over Europe train basic skills for rescue and fire fighting in tunnels. The purpose for the technical visit was to study best practice, an important input to an ongoing study in Norway.

2 days of networking sessions, professional and interactive panel discussions as well as case studies combatting the challenges, successes as well as lessons learnt from existing and newly developed tunnels.

Intersec 2018

The world’s leading trade fair for Security, Safety and Fire Protection will celebrate its 20th edition in January 21 – 23, 2018. As the largest and most diverse, offering thousands of trade buyers the latest security & safety solutions and new opportunities from the world’s brands. The 19th edition of Intersec saw a participation of 1,304 exhibitors from 58 countries and welcomed 32,750 visitors coming from all over the world. Intersec 2018 is expected to be bigger, more comprehensive and more futuristic.

The high-speed camera robot provides the operator with a set of eyes and sensors that can be deployed in hazardous environments, without compromising the lives of personnel. The robot can reconnaissance tunnel structures, underground facilities, industrial buildings and other objects that are associated with high risk of personnel casualties.

Heavy vehicles are overrepresented in the statistics of fire in Norwegian road tunnels, and this is especially true for steeper tunnels. Technical problems was a more than twice a frequent cause of fires and instances of fires in heavy vehicles, than in light vehicles says the Institute of transport economics, Norwegian Centre of Transport Research. 40% of the fires in tunnels happens in tunnels with higher incline than 5%. 

A similar fire to the serious fire in 2011, occurred may 2017 in the Oslofjord tunnel. This time the extensive self-rescue measures that was installed in 2011, worked perfectly and consequences on road users became modest. Installed safety systems and self-rescue rooms seem to have contributed to this. 

"Eyes on the Tunnel" is the motto with which ASFINAG focuses on traffic safety. Part of the campaign are motorway posters in front of the tunnel portals, advertisements on radio stations etc. At the same time, a three-minute videoclip on the topic of "tunnel safety" can be seen on social media channels.

Generally for smoke testing applications the experts recommend oil based smoke systems instead of the normal water based smoke systems. This is because water based smoke evaporates relatively quickly, especially when combined with a hot air source to give thermal buoyancy, and hence it is not very representative of how smoke from a real fire would behave.

The ViCount smoke system produce a smoke with the smallest particle size in its class, but with a high temperature resistance. Many of today’s Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models for smoke were based on the use of these systems. The smoke produced is not in itself hot, but it is extremely temperature resistant, so it can be added to the hot gases created by a burn tray or heater and used to trace how smoke would travel.

Critically, the ViCount smoke hardly evaporates at all. In a tunnel environment will smoke from these systems travel many kilometres, even with the tunnel jet fans operating. Using jet fans with water based smoke rapidly evaporates the smoke. 

Such a system can be used to hot fire training, large scale exercises, functional testing etc.
