04. AFTES 2021, The Palais des Congrès Paris, France
New date: 6th - 8th September 2021

The AFTES, French Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, can inform that they will arrange its next International Congress from 6th to 8th September 2021, again at the Palais des Congrès (Porte Maillot) in Paris.
The Grand Paris construction sites will then be in full operation and the congress aim to be close to all the actors responsible for this exceptional project.

The last edition in November 2017 was a success both in terms of the number of congress participants and exhibitors. A record number of visitors was recorded, with a strong contingent of foreign representatives. In all, the congress attracted over 4,000 participants.
Themes of the conference

At a time when the use of underground space has become crucial for the sustainable development of our cities, and when new technologies are resulting in far-reaching changes to all professions, the Congress wishes to be an opportunity for decision-makers, infrastructure managers, designers, builders and suppliers to share their experiences and projects involving underground space.

One of the highlighted themes is "Operation and maintenance of underground works serving sustainable development". And the congress wants to ask the following questions:
  • How are the subjects of the operation and maintenance of the underground structures integrated into projects?
  • What gains in terms of sustainability of the structures and response to the concerns of operators have been obtained thanks to innovative, digital or other techniques?
  • What prospects do these innovative developments open up?
On the occasion of the AFTES Congress, the French Tunnelling and Underground Space Association is launching a new ideas competition for students and/or young graduates in architecture, urban planning, urban engineering, design, etc., on the theme "The underground, a space of innovations".

The call for an ideas competition "The underground, a space of innovations" aims to spark thinking and the emergence of issues and proposals from students and/or young graduates, architects, urban planners and engineers, on their forward-looking vision of the urban and peri-urban underground. This competition wishes to encourage a real multidisciplinary approach, in which the diversity of the underground spaces available, their use and reuse, is a great opportunity to demonstrate a range of knowledge and skills (architecture, urban planning, design, engineering, etc.) while leaving plenty of room for creativity.
