Road tunnels and technology in an operational perspective

4D BIM in tunnel engineering Featured

Written by  Oct 21, 2017

BIM helps you to anticipate issues, assess information, and act more confidently at each stage of your tunnel design project. Minimize rework and improve predictability for design and construction of complex structures as tunnels. If you can add scheduling data to your information model and to the different components, generating accurate programme information and enabling step-by-step visuals of the project’s development. This process is known as 4D BIM.

4D BIM is an acronym for 4D Building Information Modeling and a term widely used in the CAD industry, refers to the intelligent linking of individual 3D CAD components or assemblies with time/schedule-related information. The use of the term 4D is intended to refer to the fourth dimension, time.

Accurate engineering will be more and more important for the tunnel operator. We can imagine all the technology that has to be implemented in a complex underground structure, to make sure that new ITS technology or complex safety systems will work as i intended in tunnels. It will be quite important to plan, construct and install with better quality standards then we see carried out today. In addition the operator will be able to review the design in the 4D BIM model to make sure that everything will work as intended and the safety for the road users are well taken care of, in an early phase of the project.

We will ask the industry for showcases, projects and exploring of new technology that gives us a innovative look into the future of 4D BIM in tunnels. Within planning and engineering, this is probably one of the most important development issues to be covered today, and especially when it comes to ensure a reliable, available, maintainable and safe tunnel.
