Training for medical students - handling accident in tunnel

Written by  Oct 21, 2017

A common mistake is to not pay attention to the cold environment and the cold surfaces in the tunnel says Mads Gilbert, specialist in anaesthesiology at the Emergency Medical Clinic at the University Hospital in Northern Norway. He says also that it is difficult to communicate and it is important to be familiar with conditions in a tunnel and to be ready for the real accident.

The training took place in the Tromsoysund tunnel in march 2014.

It´s important to protect the injured from the cold surfaces and air, but also consider to shut down the ventilation when it´s not needed. Another lesson for the students is to make sure the communication between the different emergency services and individuals is working well in a environment with high level of noise.

The tunnel is a subsea road tunnel in Tromsø. The tunnel has two runs of 3500 and 3386 meters respectively. It is 102 meters below sea level, and the largest incline/decline is 8.2%. .

The Tromsoysund tunnel was opened in 1994 as the first subsea road tunnel with two tubes in Norway. The tunnel has 15 crosslinks between the tubes. From autumn 2015 to summer 2017, the tunnel is upgraded to a higher level of safety. The work in the first tube was completed in the summer of 2016, and the work in the other is being completed in 2017.
