LED based visual guidance systems

Written by  Nov 01, 2017

There are soliutions and concept that can improve safety and traffic flow in tunnels through an active guidance system and a better lighting. In case of an critical event in the tunnel such a solution can provide visual and tactile markings and orientation for emergency exits and escape routes. This means secure aids for orientation to enable rapid evacuation and escape.

LED based visual guidance systems can be intelligently integrated in the tunnel control and automation system, and be controlled and monitored by the Traffic Control Centre.

Examples of applications are:

  • Lane and Traffic Guidance - visual marking of traffic lanes
  • Visual lighting of junctions and roundabouts - As a measure to avoid traffic incidents/ misunderstandings
  • Tunnel Lighting - uniform luminance to avoid psycho-visual irritation of drivers
  • Marking - visual marking of escape routes and escape doors
  • Dynamic Lane Changes - visual guidance for variable situation
  • Tunnel Maintenance - dynamic marking of the the road and safeguarding dangerous zones

The International Commission on Illumination - also known as the CIE, is devoted to worldwide cooperation and the exchange of information on all matters relating to the science and art of light and lighting, colour and vision, photobiology and image technology. A technical report on Emergency Lighting in Road Tunnels has been made and this report makes recommendations for emergency lighting in road tunnels longer than 500 m, to facilitate the safe evacuation of vehicle occupants in emergency situations such as fire. The report addresses the fundamental issues of emergency lighting for evacuation routes, emergency exits, escape routes and lay-bys, as well as giving some practical advice regarding aspects of installation and maintenance in road tunnels. The report also recommends lighting levels and general provisions for emergency lighting installations that, based on experience, are considered to be necessary for the safety of people driving through road tunnels in case of an incident and particularly of fire.
