Large scale fire tests with fixed firefighting systems

Written by  Oct 18, 2017

In this report presents SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden the main results of the six large-scale tests with different types of fixed firefighting system (FFFS) that were carried out in the Runehamar tunnel in June 2016.

The heat release rate for the deluge systems upon activation ranged between approximately 8 and 12 MW. In five of the tests, the heat release rate was controlled within 15 minutes of activation. The fire was then suppressed over a period of 10-30 minutes by the TN-25 nozzles, indicating that the system prevented further fire spread within the main fuel area. This nozzle was the best of those tested in terms of performance.
